The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, has advocated this Friday for “restarting” relations with France after the increase in tensions caused by the signing of the AUKUS, an alliance for the purchase and sale of submarines agreed at the end of 2021 with the United Kingdom. The signing of this agreement led to the splitting of a multimillion-dollar contract between Australia and France for the manufacture of submarines, something that provoked harsh criticism from the French government and the president, Emmanuel Macron.
The French president accused the then Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, of “lying” to him and called his ambassador to Australia for consultations. Albanese, who took office last May, will travel to Madrid next week for the NATO summit and, during the event, plans to soften the position with the French government.
“It is important that there is a restart,” he told ABC television. Thus, he has stated that the relationship between the parties is “vital” given that the country is a “central power in Europe” and “also in the Pacific.”
In this sense, he stressed that “they have already had constructive talks” and insisted that next week’s visit “is a very concrete sign that some type of repair has already been carried out,” he maintained.
