The EU offers help to Afghanistan after the serious earthquake in the east of the country

BRUSSELS, June 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union has offered this Wednesday humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people after the serious earthquake in the east of the country and whose death toll exceeds a thousand people.

“The EU stands in solidarity with the Afghan people and will provide assistance to those who need it. Through the EU humanitarian office in the country, we are in constant contact with our humanitarian partners and offer all necessary operational support”, they have secured a statement from the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic.

The European bloc regrets that the strong earthquake comes at a time when Afghanistan is suffering one of the worst humanitarian crises, with significant humanitarian needs, a food crisis and a large number of displaced people.

Previously, Lenarcic has stated that the Emergency Response Coordination Center (ERCC) is “monitoring the situation closely and is prepared to coordinate assistance from the European Union.”

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the open Richter scale recorded on Tuesday night in the Afghan province of Jost (east), near the border with Pakistan, has left a balance of at least a thousand dead, according to Afghan authorities have confirmed.
