Taiyaki: a sweet icon of Japan, from the streets to your home

Taiyaki

Taiyaki is a popular Japanese dessert that originated in the country during the Meiji era (1868-1912). Its name is derived from “tai”, meaning “golden” or “red sea bass”, and “yaki”, meaning “roasted” or “cooked”. This name comes from the shape of the cake, which resembles a red sea bass, a fish of great importance in Japanese culture.

It is typically served hot, which makes the filling deliciously creamy. It is a popular snack in Japan and can be found in street stalls, convenience stores, and bakeries. It is usually consumed as a sweet to take while walking on the street or as a quick snack.

The history of Taiyaki dates back to the Meiji period, when a technique for making fish waffles that came from Western baking was introduced to Japan. Over time, the Japanese adapted this technique and created Taiyaki, which became a beloved dessert throughout the country.

How to make Taiyaki at home

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Filling of your choice (azuki bean paste, cream, chocolate, cheese, ice cream, etc.)
  • Oil or non-stick cooking spray

Taiyaki

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and sugar.
  2. Add the egg and milk to the flour mixture and mix until the dough is smooth and lump-free. The consistency should be similar to pancake batter.
  3. Heat your Taiyaki machine or a special Taiyaki pan over medium heat and lightly spray it with oil or non-stick spray.
  4. Pour a small amount of batter into half of each fish cavity in the Taiyaki machine or pan. Make sure not to overfill, as the dough will expand during baking.
  5. Place a tablespoon of your favorite filling in the center of each piece of dough.
  6. Pour another layer of dough over the filling to cover it completely.
  7. Close the Taiyaki machine or, if you are using a pan, place the other half of the pan on top of the dough and press lightly to seal.
  8. Cook the Taiyaki for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden and crispy on the outside.
  9. Remove the Taiyaki from the machine or pan and let it cool slightly before enjoying. And ready! Now you can enjoy your delicious homemade Taiyaki with the filling of your choice.
