R. Kelly no longer on suicide watch: prosecutors

R. Kelly no longer on suicide watch: prosecutors

The filing came in response to a claim by Kelly’s lawyers last week that Kelly, 55, was put on suicide watch as a form of punishment last week after a judge sentenced him to 30 years behind bars for using his fame to sexually exploit women and girls.

Prosecutors initially said the move was necessary for Kelly’s “own safety” after a psychological exam. They reversed Tuesday, saying prison officials had taken him off suicide watch based on a follow-up “clinical assessment.”

The Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songwriter was convicted last year of racketeering and sex trafficking. He has denied any wrongdoing and plans to appeal his conviction.
