The Prince of Wales, Charles of England, has expressed his “regret” on Friday for “the lasting impact of slavery”, as part of his participation in the Commonwealth summit being held in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
“I cannot describe the depth of my sorrow for the suffering of so many, as I continue to increase my understanding of the lasting impact of slavery,” he said, before acknowledging that “the roots of the current association are deeply seated in the most painful period of history”.
“To unlock the power of our shared future, we must acknowledge the mistakes that defined our past. Many of those mistakes belong to a previous stage with different and, in some ways, worse values,” he said, according to the television network. British Sky News.
The Royal African Company, established in the 17th century with an order facilitated by King Charles II, moved thousands of Africans to America as slaves.
The words of the Prince of Wales come in the framework of trips by members of the British Royal House in which they have faced calls for the monarchy to recognize its role in the slave trade. Both Prince Charles and Prince William have expressed regret in the past, though they have not offered a public apology.
