Turkey announces the death of a prominent PKK commander in an operation in Iraq

June 24. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Turkey announced this Friday the “neutralization” of a prominent commander of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the framework of a security operation in Iraq.

Security sources cited by the Turkish state news agency, Anatolia, have indicated that the deceased is Delal Azizoglu, who joined the group in 1992 and was part of its armed wing in the Turkish province of Diyarbakir (southeast).

These sources have indicated that the woman, alias ‘Raperin’, was also responsible for structuring the group’s activities in Europe and have detailed that she has died in an operation by the Intelligence services in the Sulaimaniya district.

The PKK has not yet commented on Turkey’s claims, which come after the drone attacks carried out over the last week in Sulaimaniya province, which have caused several deaths among the group’s ranks.

The Turkish Army has intensified its operations against the PKK both in the country and in northern Iraq — where the formation has numerous bases — since the ceasefire between the Government and the armed group was broken in July 2015 .
