The DualSense is a controller with several cool features like haptic vibration and resistance triggers. Although for many that is more than enough, it seems that Sony wants to go further. We say this because new information suggests that the company could implement non-Newtonian fluids in a revision or new version of the control for PlayStation 5.
What happens is that Sony registered a new patent that discovers a new kind of analog stick, which can be retracted into the control body. You would do this with a non-Newtonian fluid, which is a kind of liquid that hardens when it receives sudden pressure.

At the moment it is not exactly clear how this could be exploited in any interesting way. One theory is that it could offer some kind of resistance like the DualSense triggers already do, or offer more control options by presenting different commands when the stick is pressed and when it’s not. What is clear is that it would not necessarily serve as a solution to the infamous drift.

Now, it’s important to be clear about one thing: this patent does not mean that the next PlayStation controller will feature non-Newtonian fluids in this or any other way.

We remind you that it is normal for technology companies to file patents to protect ideas or products under development. Many times these ideas end up being discarded for different reasons or simply do not come to fruition. That said, companies want to have their development protected in case they find something to do with it at some point or to be able to get paid if someone discovers something interesting with the idea.
