Mexico joins investigation of dead migrants found in Texas

At least half of the migrants found dead in the bed of a cargo truck in San Antonio, Texas, were of Mexican origin.

This was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs according to data collected by the Mexican consul in San Antonio, Rubén Minutti. The figure is 27 of the 51 deceased people, but so far only identity documents are available, which will be compared with fingerprints.

It was also announced that of 13 people who are in different hospitals in the area, at least three are Mexican.

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, reported that he had a conversation with the Secretary of National Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, and agreed that both countries will work together to find and punish those responsible.

The foreign minister pointed out that Mexico joined the investigations in coordination with the DSN, and also the Attorney General’s Office, chaired by Alejandro Gertz Manero, decided to open an investigation folder and for this a team moved to Texas.

After meeting with the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the United States ambassador, Ken Salazar, pointed out that these types of events are the consequence of broken and dysfunctional immigration laws.

“It underlines the importance of ensuring that we have a regional migration framework. It is once again a great sound for the leaders of nations, also for civil organizations, that we have to resolve this reality of our lives now in this year 2022”, said Salazar.

Previously, López Obrador announced that migration will be the central issue in the meeting he will hold with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, on July 12 at the White House.

“A tremendous misfortune. This is bitter proof that we must continue to insist on supporting the people so that they do not have to leave their towns to go look for life on the other side of the border,” said the president.

Meanwhile, the National Migration Institute reported that the government will bear the funeral expenses and the repatriation of the bodies of the Mexican national migrants found in the truck.
