“Crazy” marks the K-pop quintet’s long-awaited return after six months of silence since the release of their third EP, “Easy,” in February. This new single is their first release since then and comes with great anticipation, especially after the title track of “Easy” managed to enter Billboard’s coveted “Hot 100” chart.
“The message the new album is trying to convey is simple and clear: let’s go crazy with Le Sserafim,” member Hong Eunchae said at a media presentation for the new EP in Seoul. “We tried to capture the emotions of the moments that made our hearts race,” she added.
The event, which was held a day before the album’s release, featured the presentation of the new album. It has five tracks and is led by the title track titled “Crazy”, a house production based on electronic dance music, with a simple but addictive chorus.
Sakura, another member, described it as a track that makes listeners feel an “electrifying thrill,” like a million volts, and expressed that as soon as she heard the finished track, she felt a “new shock.”
Le Sserafim explores new musical styles
Since the K-Pop girl group’s debut in May 2022, Le Sserafim has managed to broaden its musical spectrum. The girls have focused on experimenting with new genres with each album release. Thus, in the case of “Crazy,” the group ventures into the “house” genre based on electronic dance music for the first time.
The band also took on the challenge of learning how to voguing for the title track. Voguing is a highly stylized modern house dance that originated in the ballroom scene of Harlem, New York in the 1960s. The members shared with the audience that they found this new experience to be a challenging one but the results were worth it.
Even for a team like ours, where we all focus quite a bit on maintaining our “fitness” image, mastering the voguing-based choreography was no easy task, Sakura explained.
Kazuha added that the old-school hip-hop dancing in their previous works was already quite a feat to pull off, but the voguing dance was no less demanding. She added that they realized when they first saw the choreography that it would be difficult, but as they rehearsed, they also discovered that it requires a tremendous amount of muscle strength.
Kim Chaewon’s reflections on the group’s Coachella performance and the criticism they received
When asked about the mixed reviews after the group’s live performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festivalin April, the group’s leader, Kim Chaewonshared that the experience was a valuable learning opportunity.
The frontwoman explained that despite having performed on many stages in a short time since her debut, Coachella was her first time at such a massive outdoor festival. She also added that perhaps that was why she felt “too excited,” unable to control her pace and lacking in some areas. “We realized that we still have “a lot to learn and experience.”
He also said that continuous improvement and growth are lifelong missions for any K-Pop band, and that the new album is the first step toward that end.
