A 74-year-old pensioner was arrested this Wednesday in Miranda de Ebro, a city in northern Spain, as the main suspect in sending six letters with pyrotechnic material to Pedro Sánchez and the Ukrainian embassy -among other destinations- between last November and December 2022.
The Spanish police arrested a 74-year-old man this Wednesday at around 9:30 am local time for sending six letters with pyrotechnic material addressed to President Pedro Sánchez, Defense Minister Margarita Robles, and the Ukrainian embassy. -among other recipients- during the past months of November and December 2022.
The man, a resident of the town of Miranda de Ebro, in northern Spain, and on the border between the regions of Castilla y León and the Basque Country, is a retired former civil servant who, according to the Police, was very active on social networks.
The monitoring of the envelopes and the stamps attached to them led the security forces to the detainee, advancing the raid until this Wednesday when verifying that the man was getting rid of material that could have been used in the manufacture of the artifacts, according to legal sources quoted by the Spanish media ‘Eldiario.es’.
alleged crime of terrorism
Once the detainee’s home had been analyzed and after passing through a medical center to assess his state of health, the suspect was transferred to Madrid, where on Friday the 27th he will be made available to the head of the Central Court of Instruction number 4 of the Spanish National Court .
Judge José Luis Calama of said hearing was the one who opened an investigation for an alleged crime of terrorism. He could also face a crime against high state institutions and another for injuries for the minor injuries caused to a worker at the Ukrainian embassy.
The Spanish police are considering the possibility that he is the sole author of the events, a hypothesis that he handled early on, given that four of the six letters had the same type of written calligraphy. Despite this, they do not rule out possible collaborators.
The arrest comes after the false lead published by the US newspaper ‘The New York Times’ last weekend, citing official European and US sources. That article pointed to the Russian intelligence services. However, the Spanish authorities have only confirmed that the detainee followed pro-Russian and pro-invasion YouTube accounts and that he had an inactive account on the Russian social network VK.
Only one of the cards exploded
The total of the six letters sent by the detainee were addressed to the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez; the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles; the ambassadors of Ukraine and the United States, Sergi Pohoreltsev and Julissa Reynoso; as well as the director of the Instalaza arms company in Zaragoza, manufacturer of the grenade launchers that Spain provided as aid to Ukraine; and the person in charge of the Satellite Center of the Torrejón de Ardoz air base, in Madrid.
Of all of them, only the one addressed to the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid exploded, causing minor injuries to an agency worker. Four of the other envelopes were exploded by members of the Spanish police and one last one, the one sent to the air base, could be opened to recover the contents.
