Malawi runs out of cholera vaccines as it confirms nearly 890 deaths from current outbreak

21 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Malawi Ministry of Health has confirmed this Saturday that it has exhausted the almost three million vaccines used to combat the cholera outbreak declared in March last year and that it has already left a total of 881 deaths in the country.

Pending the arrival of a new consignment of vaccines from the United Nations, the spokesman for the Ministry, Adrian Chikumbe, has asked the population to strictly comply with hygiene regulations.

“It is true that we no longer have vaccines. We have spent the ones we had,” he declared in an appearance collected by the Nyasa Times portal.

In the midst of this situation, the regional director of Emergencies of the United Nations, Abdou Salam Gueye, is visiting the country to “better understand the situation of the outbreak and provide guidance on the general response of the World Health Organization”, has made it known on his Twitter account.
