US and Ukraine discuss closer ties with NATO after Washington summit

U.S. State Department Secretary Antony Blinken met with a Ukrainian government delegation on Tuesday to discuss a number of issues, including kyiv’s aspirations for closer ties with NATO following the Alliance’s summit in Washington in July.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna has outlined her government’s expectations from the meeting between the members of the Atlantic Alliance, and has discussed the country’s progress in its accession to the European Union and NATO, while Blinken has promised more financial support at the organization level, according to a statement from the Ukrainian Presidency.

Meanwhile, State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said at a press conference that Blinken has expressed his intention to take steps to bring Ukraine closer to joining NATO.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov has told the Secretary of State that he needs to equip his troops with more air defence systems in order to “protect cities” and “vital infrastructure”.

Afterwards, the Minister of Energy, German Galushchenko, described the consequences of the latest Russian attacks against the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, and they discussed the “decisions” that NATO members must take to “contribute to the security” of these facilities in view of the arrival of winter.

Ukrainian President Andriy Yermak has spoken about the results of the Ukraine Peace Summit and the implementation of certain points of his peace plan in the coming weeks, while Blinken congratulated him on the “historic support” achieved. In addition, Yermak has urged the introduction of more sanctions against Russian banking and financial institutions.
