Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday that there was no doubt that the Kursk region, the scene of an unprecedented Ukrainian incursion since the start of the war, would be regained “when the time is right,” but how and when were not matters to be discussed publicly, he said.
“Our military is doing its job and will do it, control will be restored. We have no doubt about that,” said the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Naturally, military plans on how and in what manner cannot be made public,” he explained.
Peskov also said that a state of emergency was in effect in those areas under Ukrainian control. “This situation will be corrected in a timely manner,” he said, according to Russian news agencies.
The Ministry of Defence has estimated the number of casualties among Ukrainian forces on the Kursk front at more than 15,300, of which about 370 have been recorded in the past 24 hours. “The operation to destroy the troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continues,” the statement said.
The Russian Defence Ministry also stressed that during the fighting the army managed to destroy 1,053 combat vehicles, including a hundred tanks and various armoured infantry and transport vehicles, as well as hundreds of artillery pieces and dozens of projectiles and defence systems.
On August 6, Ukrainian troops launched their first operation on Russian territory since the beginning of the war more than two and a half years ago, managing to take control of several areas of Kursk. As a result, more than 100,000 civilians have had to be evacuated.
