Zelensky assures that "Ukraine's future lies in the EU" after receiving candidate status

June 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, has assured that “the future of Ukraine is in the European Union”, once the leaders of the Twenty-seven have granted Ukraine the status of a candidate to enter the European bloc on Thursday.

“I sincerely welcome the decision of the leaders of the European Union in the European Council to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate,” Zelensky said on his Twitter social network profile.

In this publication, the Ukrainian president stressed that this decision marks a “unique and historic moment” in relations between kyiv and the European Union, for which he thanked the support of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and his counterpart in the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The leaders of the European Union have agreed this Thursday to grant Ukraine and Moldova the status of a candidate to enter the European bloc, as confirmed by the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, in a message on social networks, and later by Michel himself.

Before the meeting, the leaders of the Twenty-seven celebrated the vote as a “decisive moment” and defended it as a “geopolitical choice” not only to support these countries against Russia, but also in terms of security for the European Union.
