An obituary written by a journalist for her late mother is going viral on social media with readers praising the writer for “masterfully” making them laugh and cry at the same time.
New York Times writer caity weaverAged 33, he composed the moving piece following the death of his beloved mother, Dr. Maureen Brennan-Weaver, on June 14 at the age of 65.
Weaver’s obituary was published in Pennsylvania Patriot News before the journalist shared it in Twitterwhere it racked up over 30,000 likes and hundreds of heartwarming replies.
“Dr. Maureen Brennan-Weaver died at her home in Harrisburg on June 14, shocking all who loved her by coming ahead of schedule for the first time in her life,” read the article’s amusing opening line.
The obituary painted a vivid picture of Brennan-Weaver, who studied at Bryn Mawr and practiced as a podiatrist.
“She chose podiatry to get vacations, but she often forgot to schedule them,” Weaver wrote whimsically of her mother. “[She] it was treasured by the patients who showered her with homemade goodies that she occasionally accepted as payment.”
The loving daughter continued, “I couldn’t stop buying shoes for patients if I saw just what they needed while shopping. She adamantly did not make house calls, except to patients she ‘really liked’; of these, there were so many that she had to set aside entire days for house calls.”
An only child, Weaver also paid tribute to her mother’s love of bargain hunting in a comedic way.
“If you mention something you like, she [Brennan-Weaver] I’d give you 11 when I found them at a great price,” he hilariously wrote. She “clipped coupons for diapers and left them in the baby aisle at the grocery store. Decades ago, he bought a huge box of toothbrushes for pennies on the dollar and has supported his family with toothbrushes ever since.”
The daughter also described Brennan-Weaver as “hilariously funny and pathologically generous,” recalling her having “a laugh that echoed through the rooms.”
The obituary concluded: “No amount of time with the amazing Maureen would have been enough for her family and friends, though she gave us enough toothbrushes and keepsakes to last several lifetimes. Oh how we loved her!”
