Unions demonstrate for Labor Day in Panama

( Spanish) — Union organizations in Panama carried out various activities this Monday, May 1 to commemorate International Labor Day.

After a mass celebrated in the Don Bosco Menor Basilica, in Panama City, there was a rally and subsequent march to Plaza 5 de Mayo, also in the heart of the capital.

Among their demands, the participants asked the government for greater actions to generate employment. From the Autonomous Central of Workers, they assure that there are 777,000 people who live in the informal economy and another 200,000 unemployed.

In this regard, the Ministry of Labor of Panama indicated that after the covid-19 pandemic they have been able to recover jobs. They add that, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Census, there is 9.9% unemployment.
