Two people have been arrested in Poland suspected of attacking the Russian opponent Leonid Volkov, a collaborator of the late activist Alexei Navalni, in March, the president of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, announced this Friday.
“A month ago, Navalny's aide Leonid Volkov was brutally attacked in Vilnius. Today I am pleased to announce that the suspects have been detained in Poland. Thanks to the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, and law enforcement. Together we warn “The organizers of the crime: do not try to repeat it!” declared President Nauseda on his personal account on the social network X, formerly Twitter.
Volkov was attacked in March outside his home in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, where he lives in exile. The attacker broke one of the windows of his car, sprayed his eyes with tear gas and hit him with a hammer, according to police reports.
The Russian activist, who was the campaign manager of the late Russian opponent Alexei Navalny for the 2018 presidential elections, blamed the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, for the attack.
The Lithuanian president held a telephone conversation with the Polish president, whom he thanked for his “excellent cooperation”, according to the Polish media 'Rzeczpospolita'. Likewise, Nauseda has assured that the detainees will be handed over by Poland to Lithuania, after carrying out the appropriate procedures.
