Lavrov regrets Gaza offensive attempts and says Tehran does not have nuclear weapons
April 19 () –
The Russian authorities have asked the governments of Israel and Iran this Friday to exercise “containment” following the attack carried out at dawn by Israeli forces against Iranian territory after Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles against Israeli territory over the weekend in response to the attack on its Consulate in Damascus, the Syrian capital.
Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov indicated during a press conference that “although there have been no official statements from Israel at the moment, Russia is studying all the information it has at its disposal about what happened.”
However, he has clarified that although he considers it “premature” to make current assessments, “regardless of the information, Russia advocates containment and avoiding actions that cause greater tension in such a complex region,” according to the Russian news agency. Interfax news.
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has pointed out that Moscow has conveyed to Israel through “diplomatic channels” that Iran “does not want an escalation” of tension in the Middle East.
In this sense, he has denounced the attempts to “divert attention” from Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip “under the pretext of alleged threats from Tehran” and has ruled out that Iran has nuclear weapons, something that “has been confirmed by the IAEA” (International Atomic Energy Agency), as highlighted.
