Two more shootings in the US on July 4, the Pope prays for victims of Highland Park

In addition to the attack of a man who opened fire outside Chicago against parade goers for the US Independence Day, which left seven dead and more than 30 injured, two other shootings altered the national holiday in two cities in the country.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, eight people were injured, some seriously, by gunshots in a park during unofficial Fourth of July celebrations.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 11:30 pm at Boom Island Park, when a crowd was watching a fireworks display.

Police said no formal event or fireworks were scheduled for the park, but people had gathered there to celebrate the holiday.

No arrests had been made so far and authorities have not released details about the eight injured, who were taken to area hospitals.

In Gary, Indiana, three people were killed and seven were injured during a block party in a residential neighborhood after midnight Tuesday.

The police who went to the scene found three people on the ground who did not respond to stimuli, authorities reported. The injured were taken to hospitals and there was no report on the severity of their injuries. It was also not reported if there was one or more aggressors.

The coroner’s office said the dead were a 20-year-old woman, a 26-year-old man and a 25-year-old man.

In a telegram of condolences to the archbishop of Chicago, Francis described the tragedy as a “senseless shooting” and said he was praying for the six people killed and for “healing and comfort for the wounded and bereaved.”

Citing the Bible, the pope called on everyone to “reject violence in all its forms and respect life in all its stages.”
