In a live-streamed Q&A session, CEO Matt Mullenweg and COO Zandy Ring fielded questions from Tumblr users about the company’s direction. executives offered some interesting insights on what it’s like to manage Tumblr right nowdespite the fact that they did not have total freedom to speak.

According to MullenwegTumblr spends about $30 million more than it makes each year. This isn’t too surprising, given Tumblr’s history as a company, especially considering one of its biggest problems, which is simply that while it has a loyal user base, Tumblr has also had trouble growing its daily active users since its famous porn ban.

The fundamental tension of Tumblr is that it doesn’t have enough users to be profitable and is too complicated to use, but the users it does have are very protective of the site’s culture and don’t follow standard patterns of consumer behaviorsomething complicated to generate profits.
