( Spanish) — In Lima, the Control Commission of the Congress approved in its session this Wednesday, to investigate the existence of an alleged “family criminal organization directed from the Government Palace”. This decision of the commission must be approved by the plenary session of Congress, made up of all 130 parliamentarians, so that their investigations can begin.
As noted on his Twitter the president of the commission, Héctor Ventura, will guarantee due process.
The National Prosecutor’s Office has six open investigations against President Pedro Castillo, five of them for alleged crimes committed during his term, which began on July 28, 2021.
Castillo is investigated, as indicated by the Constitution, by the office of the National Prosecutor, head of the Public Ministry, while the Special Team of Prosecutors Against Corruption in Power, dependent on the National Prosecutor’s Office, investigates figures of the government or related to Castillo that do not enjoy constitutional protection.
The team of prosecutors investigates Castillo as the alleged head of a criminal organization allegedly “entrenched” in the Peruvian State to, among other things, grant public works bids and awards in a targeted manner. Castillo and his defense, made up of lawyers Benji Espinoza and Eduardo Pachas, have repeatedly denied the prosecution’s allegations.
