March 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of the United States has denied on Monday having financed the massive demonstrations against the Government of Israel, in which the assistants called for the suspension of the controversial judicial reform.
The deputy spokesman for the US State Department, Vedant Patel, has indicated that allegations that Washington would have financed the protests against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “are totally and demonstrably false.”
Patel has explained that the State Department “supports a wide range of programs by civil society actors around the world to strengthen awareness of Human Rights and democratic values.”
However, in the case of Israel, the US authorities provided “a modest grant” to the NGO Quality Government Movement “during the previous administration” and until September 2022, Patel has stated.
The US spokesman has indicated that, as the last disbursement took place before the last elections in Israel, there is no reason to link both events, despite the fact that the son of the head of government, Yair Netanyahu, shared these accusations on his social networks. .
In recent weeks, thousands of people have demonstrated in the streets of Israel to protest the processing of the controversial judicial reform promoted by the Israeli Government. However, on Sunday night, more than 600,000 people gathered spontaneously after the prime minister fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, ousted after advocating a suspension of the reform.
In the most recent demonstrations, until Netanyahu agreed to a “pause” in the reform process, there have been moments of tension in which there have been clashes between activists and the police, who have used water cannons against those attending the March.
