The US underlines its support for Taiwan after the break with Honduras and criticizes that China "makes promises that it does not keep"

March 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States government has underlined its support for Taiwan on Monday, after Honduras announced the severance of its ties with the island and the resumption of bilateral relations with China.

The deputy spokesman for the US State Department, Vedant Patel, considered it “important to point out” that the Chinese authorities “often make promises in exchange for diplomatic recognition that they ultimately fail to deliver.”

“There are many recent examples of this type of behavior in Latin America and around the world,” said the US spokesman, who stressed that “regardless of this decision,” Washington “will continue to expand its commitment to Taiwan.”

However, Patel has indicated that the change in relations between Taipei and Beijing announced by Tegucigalpa last week is “a sovereign decision.”

The Honduran government announced this Saturday the rupture of its diplomatic relations with Taiwan, by recognizing “the existence of only one China in the world”, a change of position that China appreciated. For their part, the Taiwanese authorities lamented the end of the “82 years of friendship and cooperation” between the two.
