The Congress of the Social Democratic Party of Portugal (PSD), the main Portuguese opposition party, has approved this Sunday with 91.6 percent of votes the proposal for a National Political Commission proposed by the new leader of the formation, Luís Montenegro , who has also seen his position as president confirmed at the congress held this weekend.
This figure represents a higher percentage than that obtained by the predecessors of Montenegro Rui Rio and Pedro Passos Coelho in the election of the highest decision-making body of the PSD between congresses, according to the Portuguese press.
The president of the PSP Congress table, Paulo Mota Pinto, explained that 721 delegates have voted, of which 661 have supported the list of Montenegro (91.6 percent), well above the record of Rio in 2020 (62.4 percent) or Passos Coelho in 2014 (85 percent), 2016 (79.8 percent) or 2010 (87.2 percent).
Montenegro has promised in his speech “to do everything possible to give a new government to Portugal” and has charged against the pacts with leftist parties that the ruling Socialist Party maintained in the previous legislature.
“When have we associated ourselves with anti-NATO parties, or anti-EU, or anti-euro, or anti-IPSS –Institution Particular de Solidaridad Social–, or anti-mercy, or anti-private health sector, or even more serious, pro-Russian parties in the midst of the Ukraine war?” he argued. “We have never done that, nor are we going to do it. The one who has done all this has been the Portuguese PS”, she has riveted.
“We are going to do everything to lead a new majority in Portugal. We are going to do everything so that this government has stability and governance conditions,” he asserted.
Montenegro, 49, won the PSD’s internal primaries after beating Jorge Moreira da Silva by 73 to 35 percent of the vote, but his position was not made official until the party’s congress held this weekend.
Montenegro is a lawyer and comes from the private sector, although he has been mayor in the town of Espinho. In 2002 he was elected deputy to Parliament, a position he held until 2019. He was spokesman for the PSD between 2011 and 2017. Now he will try to rebuild the party to try to win the next legislative elections, scheduled for 2026.
