The National High Court has rejected a new request for the freedom of the former Venezuelan military officer claimed by the United States, Hugo ‘El Pollo’ Carvajal, due to the “obvious” risk that he will escape as soon as he is released from prison. This former Venezuelan military man has tried on several occasions to prevent his extradition not only with resources but also by giving a statement on various matters to try to collaborate with the Justice and obtain favorable treatment. One of these aspects has been several accusations against Podemos and its leaders of alleged irregular financing that, for now, have been ignored by the criminal court. “They are third-party narratives,” said the magistrates.
A few days ago, however, his testimony was used by Judge Manuel García Castellón to open an investigation against Juan Carlos Monedero, one of the founders of the party led by Ione Belarra, to open a case against him for money laundering and false documents. He made this decision after the National Court forced him to close the “prospective” case that, according to the magistrates, he had secretly opened around the party.
Carvajal, arrested in Madrid a year ago, alleged before the judges that the Strasbourg court had paralyzed the execution of his surrender until ruling on his appeal. The judges of the National Court reject that this allows him to be released in a car in which they explain that the risk of flight has even increased. The delivery of it, they say, has been paralyzed but “at no time has it been left without effect.”
They explain in their resolution that Carvajal is claimed by the US for “serious” acts related to drug trafficking, terrorism and criminal organizations. They also remember that if he is now in prison and claimed internationally, it is because he had previously escaped: “The risk of escape not only persists, but has increased since the decision to surrender is final, both in the jurisdictional and governmental channels. ” waiting for the ECHR to make a decision on his case.
