The Israeli Army has apologized for the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shirín abú Aklé, one year after her death when she was shot in the head while covering an operation by the Armed Forces in Jenin, in the West Bank.

Although at first the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not assume authority for the death of the journalist -who wore a helmet and a vest identifying her as a press officer-, finally in September 2022 they assumed that there was a “high probability ” that the shots that ended his life were from the Israeli military, although it would have been something “accidental”.

On this occasion, the IDF spokesman, Daniel Hagari, lamented his death during an interview with , although without assuming responsibility either. “I think this is an opportunity to say that we are very sorry for the death of Shirín abú Aklé,” the spokesman responded to a question from the journalist from the US channel.

“She was a very established journalist. In Israel we value our democracy, and in a democracy we highly value journalism and press freedom. We want journalists to feel safe in Israel, especially in times of war, even if they criticize us,” she added. the spokesperson.

Last year, published and verified several videos of the moment of the death of Shirín abú Aklé in which it was shown that the journalist was not in a place of active conflict, and that she died at the hands of a shooter who shot at the back from behind his head, on May 11, 2022.

Numerous countries and international organizations criticized the death of the journalist, as well as Israel’s response to requests to open an in-depth and transparent investigation, although Israel claimed to have carried out the investigation internally.
