The French Criminal Court has sentenced Salah Abdeslam to life in prison on Wednesday, the only survivor of the group of Islamist terrorists that killed 90 people in the November 2015 attacks in the Bataclan room in Paris.
In this way, the French Justice has complied with the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, which at the beginning of June asked to apply the harshest penalty. Both Abdeslam and his defense opposed the Public Ministry’s proposal, which they also called a “social death penalty.”
After almost ten months of allegations, the French Criminal Court has concluded the case by convicting the Islamist terrorist of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and conspiracy to commit a terrorist act, according to BMF TV.
Justice has included 19 other suspects in the case, who have received sentences ranging from two years in prison to life imprisonment, although Abdeslam has been the only one sentenced as “co-author” of the attacks in Paris and Saint-Denis , without influencing the fact that he did not shoot the victims.
“We can only point out that, despite his tears, impregnated with ideology, he has shown himself incapable of expressing remorse,” said prosecutor Camille Hennetier, who pointed out that Abdeslam “is far from having shown an abandonment of this voluntary servitude” .
However, the judicial process has indeed hinted at a change in the attitude of the terrorist, who presented himself at the first hearings as “an Islamic State fighter”, and on Monday, when the trial concluded, he claimed not to be a murderer.
“I am not a murderer. If you convict me of murder, you will commit an injustice,” said Abdeslam, who has limited himself to acknowledging “mistakes” in his final word before the Special Criminal Court.
The chain of attacks in 2015, which took place in up to six points in the center of Paris, resulted in more than 130 deaths, most of them in the Bataclan room.
