The French Government supports giving constitutional status to the right to abortion

June 25. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The French Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, has expressed this Saturday the Government’s support for the initiative to give constitutional status to the right to abortion in France.

“We must engrave this achievement in stone,” Borne said in a message posted on Twitter. For this reason, the Government will “firmly support” the bill presented by La República En Marcha (LREM), the party of French President Emmanuel Macron.

“For all women, for human rights, we must engrave this achievement in stone. Parliament must be able to unite very broadly around this text,” she argued.

The LREM spokeswoman in the National Assembly, Aurore Bergé, has been in charge of announcing the presentation of a bill in this sense. From the opposition, the New Popular Ecologist and Social Union (NUPES) also intend to present their own text next Monday.

Bergé has criticized in France Inter the decision announced this Friday by the Supreme Court of the United States to revoke the constitutional nature of the right to abortion in the United States, a “catastrophic decision for women around the world.”

“You have a woman who dies every 9 minutes from an abortion that is performed incorrectly, in an unsafe way,” the French leader recalled.

Against it is the bench of the far-right National Grouping party led by Marine Le Pen, which has already announced that it will make a “fierce opposition” to the initiative.
