WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart has strongly charged against Telegram for various issues related to the privacy of the applicationall from a Wired article where it is explained that the Russian authorities are using the instant messaging service as a weapon against antiwar activists.
Some of the problems that Will Cathcart mentions are, as he quotes the article, the absence of end-to-end encryption, something that has been shown on more than one occasion to be wrong. Will is based on a sentence from the article, which indicates that “Telegram has the ability to share information with authorities.”
With this he conveniently omits that Telegram has always refused to do so, to the point that the service was blocked in the region. In the same way, access was later unblocked due to the promise of the fight against terrorism, but but not before admitting defeat at the impossibility of truly blocking Telegram in Russia.
Likewise, he also mentions the major disaster that was the fact of being able to locate any user with an accuracy of two miles, although he omits to mention that this was patched immediately. However, finally acknowledges that as director of WhatsApp, he is interested in criticizing Telegramasking that any messaging service be used except Telegram.
