The death toll from the sinking of a boat in western Nigeria rises to 106

June 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Nigerian Police has reported this Wednesday that the death toll has risen to 106 after the sinking of a boat in the vicinity of a village located in the town of Patigi, in the western state of Kwara.

“Among the victims were people from Ebu with 61 victims, Dzakan with 38, Kpada with four dead and three other victims from Kogi state, bringing the total number of victims to 106 and the total number of people rescued to around 144,” the spokesman for the Kwara State Police command, Ajayi Okasanmi, said in a statement.

The managing director of the Hydroelectric Power Production Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Mallam Abubakar Yelwa, has indicated that the high number of victims is due to the fact that many of the passengers were not wearing a life jacket, the newspaper reported. ‘Punch’.

A landslide in an area near the engine caused the boat to flood, carrying up to 300 people who were returning Monday from a wedding held over the weekend in the neighboring state of Niger.
