South Korea calls for increased cooperation with NATO to deal with North Korean threat

July 12 () –

The president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, has urged this Wednesday the authorities of Japan, Australia and New Zealand to increase cooperation with NATO and promote “union” to face the threat from North Korea after the launch of a new long-range ballistic missile.

“I believe that the four of us must remain united and together with NATO to establish a strong collective posture in terms of security,” said Yoon, who pointed out that “we must use the existing opportunity to promote cooperation within the NATO framework. and play a leadership role in security in the Indo-Pacific region.”

This was the statement made by the president after a meeting with the leaders of the three countries on the sidelines of the NATO summit, which is being held in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, according to information from the Yonhap news agency.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has echoed these words and has strongly condemned this new release, which endangers “peace and stability” and has expressed his desire to respond jointly.

For his part, his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, has alerted Pyongyang that it is violating UN regulations. “Once again we see a launch from North Korea”, he has affirmed before insisting that “they are together with South Korea”.

New Zealand President Chris Hipkins has said the NATO summit has allowed world leaders to meet at a “challenging time for the world,” especially now that “Ukraine is under attack.”
