At least six people have died and eight more have been injured due to a detachment of rocks, ice and snow that occurred on Mount Marmolada in the Italian Alps. Another 18 people have been evacuated.

Authorities have deployed six rescue helicopters and several drones have been launched to search for the missing, the Italian news agency AGI reports.

The rockfall has caused an avalanche of snow, ice and rocks that has caused a crack to open in the glacier and has affected two groups of hikers, according to the authorities. The remains have traveled a distance of about two kilometers down the slope.

The authorities have asked the population to avoid the area due to the risk of new avalanches. Thus, the municipalities of Canazei and Rocca Pietore have jointly issued ordinances prohibiting access and movement through the affected area until the nature of the landslide is determined with geological and glaciological studies.

“A large serac de la Marmolada collapsed and, according to preliminary information from the Emergency and Emergency Health Service (SUEM), there are about 15 people affected, seven of whom were injured, one of them in serious condition,” he posted on Twitter. the president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, later updated data.

“The injured have been admitted to the hospitals of Belluno, Treviso, Trento and Bolzano. Just yesterday in Marmolada the temperature record was reached, about 10 degrees at the top”, added Zaia.

The president of the autonomous province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, is already heading to Canazei, where an operations center has been set up to coordinate the work.
