The secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Li Qiang, declared this Saturday the “victory” against the outbreak of the omicron variant of the coronavirus that has led the country’s authorities to declare a blockade of the entire city for weeks, in one of the most important response operations carried out since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country.

Shanghai began the closure of the Pudong and Puxi districts on March 28 at the beginning of a quarantine to stop an outbreak that has left more than 60,000 affected since the beginning of the pandemic, most of whom have already been discharged. medical.

Specifically, Shanghai has registered 63,226 infections and 595 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, with peaks of 3,000 daily cases around April and a maximum of 70 daily deaths in early May, at the height of the omicron outbreak.

But this Saturday, the authorities have reported no new local cases, neither symptomatic nor asymptomatic for the first time since February 23.

“We won the battle for the defense of Shanghai,” Li said this Saturday during the general evaluation of the fight against the outbreak; a meeting collected by the Chinese international newspaper ‘Global Times’.

The metropolis resumed its normal life on June 1 with the implementation of fifty measures to help affected companies and people and recover the economy and society as soon as possible after the scenes of tension experienced at times when residents came to protest the lack of access to basic supplies during the lockdown.
