Samsung introduces NTN satellite communication technology for 5G smartphones

24 Feb. (Portaltic/EP) –

Samsung Electronics has launched 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) modem technology, a standardized system that enables direct communication between this generation of mobile devices and the satellites.

The company has commented that this system is specially intended for communication “in remote areas” and that it plans to integrate this technology into Exynos modem solutions in order to “accelerate 5G satellite communications communication and pave the way for the Internet of Everything (IoE) era,” powered by 6G”.

NTN is a communications technology which uses satellites and other non-terrestrial vehicles to provide connectivity to regions previously inaccessible via terrestrial networks, such as mountains, deserts or oceans.

In this sense, the South Korean manufacturer considers that this system will be “essential in disaster areas“and that it hopes to promote future urban air mobility (UAM) with it, such as unmanned aircraft, as explained in a statement.

Samsung’s NTN technology complies with the 5G standards defined by the 3GPP Release 17 standard, ensuring interoperability and scalability between devices provided by global telecom operators, smartphone manufacturers and companies that develop chips.

The company has commented, on the other hand, that for “highly reliable” NTN satellite communication with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, it has developed and simulated satellite technology based on the 5G NTN standard. using Exynos 5300 modemwhich has helped it “accurately predict satellite locations and minimize frequency offsets caused by Doppler shift.”

Thanks to this technology, future modems in this family will support two-way text messages, high-definition images and video sharing.

Finally, Samsung has said that it plans to secure a standardized NB-IoT NTN technology for use in its next-generation modem platforms. This will eliminate the need for a wireless antenna chip built into smartphones.
