Warns that Ukraine could take advantage of this initiative to “regroup and rearm”
April 16 () –
The Russian authorities have clarified this Tuesday that no one has yet officially proposed the conditions of a momentary ceasefire during the next Olympic Games in Paris, a possibility advanced the day before by the French president himself, Emmanuel Macron.
President Macron expressed his interest on Monday in agreeing to a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and also in the Middle East through an Olympic truce, a symbolic mechanism of ancient Greek tradition with which to achieve a temporary ceasefire from one week before and up to one week after the Olympics.
In this sense, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov has pointed out not only that an official proposal has not yet been presented, but that there is also fear that Ukraine could take advantage of this type of initiative “to try to regroup and regroup.”
“This, of course, significantly complicates the process of considering such initiatives,” Peskov acknowledged, according to information collected by the Russian news agency TASS.
The president of France announced the day before his intention to reach a truce during the Olympic Games – which this year will be held in Paris between July 26 and August 11. Macron announced that he would try to involve “many partners” for this purpose, and even pointed to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Macron recalled that the Chinese head of state already had to deal with a similar situation in 2022, when China organized the Winter Olympic Games, and stressed that the Olympic event can contribute “many things” from “a diplomatic point of view.”
