April 16 () –
The Constitutional Court of Moldova has given its approval to the holding of a referendum on accession to the European Union, an initiative promoted by the Moldovan president, Maia Sandu, and scheduled for mid-October.
Now the issue goes to the Moldovan Parliament, dominated by the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), and which must ultimately approve the holding of the popular consultation, reports the NewsMaker news portal.
The referendum could be held on October 20. If the Moldovan population approves accession to the European Union, several amendments will have to be made to the Constitution, the preamble of which will highlight the irreversibility of joining the EU.
Likewise, the Moldovan Magna Carta will have an article called 'European Integration' and which will indicate that the country adheres to the treaties that establish the EU and the laws that review the founding treaties of the bloc.
President Sandu announced at the end of December last year her intention to hold a referendum on EU membership. In fact, PAS has already launched an information campaign to call for a yes vote in the popular consultation.
