The Government of Baluchistan declared a state of disaster in the city of Quetta on Wednesday after the death of twenty people in the southwestern province of Pakistan due to heavy monsoon rains recorded during the last day.
The rains continue for the second consecutive day in several districts of Baluchistan, where several rivers and canals have overflowed recently, according to information from the Geo TV television network.
Local authorities have indicated that the floods and landslides have also resulted in at least twenty injuries and dozens of homes destroyed.
The province’s Disaster Management Authority has indicated that the districts of Qila Saifulá, Zhob, Pishin and Harnai are the most affected, although there have been severe floods in Jushnub overnight.
Among the deceased are five women from the same family, who died when their house collapsed due to strong winds, as reported by the newspaper ‘Dawn’.
Also, during the last hours the lifeless bodies of four other people have been recovered in Jarotabad. As the rains continue, some districts have been left without power.
However, sources from the energy company Qesco have indicated that electricity has already been restored in some areas of Quetta, while the authorities remain on high alert before the forecast for the next three days.
The National Disaster Management Authority estimates that at least 77 people have died in the country since June 14 in incidents related to monsoon rains. Floods, showers, droughts and soil erosion due to poor air quality have increased in Pakistan in recent years.
The Minister of Climate Change, Sherry Rehman, has indicated that among the fatalities there are minors and has warned that the rains have increased by 87 percent in the country. In this regard, she underlined that 39 people have died in Baluchistan alone since mid-June.
