The transition to this new model will serve, according to Blizzard, “to support our goal of adding more content to the game more frequently.” “One of our goals is to ensure that the game provides plenty of entertainment, fun and ways to express yourself no matter how much you invest in it; even if you decide not to spend anything!” adds the company. More content will be delivered at launch than ever since the original release of Overwatch 2 in 2016.
Starting October 4, Overwatch 2 content drops will be seasonal. Each of them will last about nine weeks and will add a new hero or map, as well as new experiences and ways to play. They will also be accompanied by their respective battle pass, each with a unique theme and more than 80 levels of unlockable cosmetic items. In addition, the beginning of each season will serve to “squeeze the balance changes of the heroes in a way that everything feels new and distinctive.”
Overwatch 2 Battle Passes will have two paths, a free one with cosmetic items and a paid one that will add some perks like immediate access to new characters and an experience boost. The premium battle pass will cost 1,000 Overwatch coins (equivalent to about 10 euros). These coins can be purchased directly or by completing weekly challenges. To progress through the Battle Pass, all you need to do is play Overwatch 2 and complete daily and weekly missions.
The first season of Overwatch 2 will add three heroes, Sojourn, Junker Queen and Kiriko. New heroes will normally arrive every other season, with the exception of seasons 1 and 2, which will both have a new one. Regarding the maps, there are five new additions, Circuit Royal, Colosseo, Midtown, New Queen Street and Paraíso, while Portugal: Esperança is the new advance map. The maps will be available to everyone and in the future a new one will be added every two seasons.
The arrival of Overwatch 2 also means support for cross-platform play with cross-progression between all platforms, i.e. PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Battle.net.
