MVNOs are crowned with the most affordable rates in postpaid and mobile recharges

As digitalization advances in everyday life, the need for connectivity services will increase. But faced with a complex economic outlook due to rising inflation, Mexicans are looking for options that allow them to stay connected at an affordable price.

Who offers plans with more data at a lower price?

Postpaid has always been one of the segments least used by Mexicans. As of the second quarter of 2023, only 16% of users have a telephone plan, a trend that is explained by the expense that users have to maintain a monthly income.

However, companies such as MVNOs are seeking to gain users in this segment through affordable plans. The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) report called “Mobile Telecommunications Services Plans and Rates 2024” highlights that an MVNO is the one with the most affordable rent. This is Mexmovil, which offers 1,000 MB for 60 pesos per month, as well as unlimited calls and messages. Added to its second plan, which includes 2,250 MB for 125 pesos per month.

This plan is followed by Telcel, which offers 3,072 MB, unlimited calls and messages for 229 pesos per month.

AT&T, for its part, has a 229 pesos plan that includes 1,536 MB, but unlike Mexmovil and Telcel, the US company’s plan already includes the use of social networks that can even be chosen by the users themselves.

What is the best recharge?

In Mexico, there is a marked preference among mobile phone service consumers for the balance recharge scheme. This phenomenon is accentuated when there is an inflationary increase in the basket of basic products and services. Currently, eight out of ten users opt for the prepaid system to obtain data and telephone minutes on their mobile devices.

MVNOs are the companies that have begun to gain ground in this segment, thanks to their offers of more megabytes for less pesos. For example, the IFT report highlights that the lowest recharge amount is 10 pesos and is offered by Bait, Movistar and Unefon for 100 MB, as well as Oxxo Cel and Telcel for 50 MB.

The data in the regulator’s document highlights that Bait and CFE Telecom, the state-owned company in charge of providing connectivity services in remote areas, are the companies that offer the most affordable recharges and the largest data packages.

For example, Bait’s 50-peso recharge offers 5,000 MB with a validity of seven days. CFE Telecom offers 4,000 MB with a validity of three days for a 45-peso subscription. Meanwhile, AT&T offers a 4,608 MB recharge for an amount of 300 pesos.

For a 100 pesos recharge, Bait offers 20,000 MB with a validity of 15 days, while CFE Telecom grants the user 10,000 MB with a validity of seven days for a 50 pesos recharge. Similar offers from operators were not included in the report.
