Moldova has denied on Friday that the Ukrainian Armed Forces pose a “threat” to the Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria after Russia accused Kiev of being behind a “false flag” attack in the region.

“The messages disseminated in recent days in the public space by the authorities of the Russian Federation about the alleged provocations by the Armed Forces do not correspond to the truth,” the Moldovan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In this sense, the Ministry has stressed that the security situation in the region is “stable” at the same time that they have assured that the Russian statements are “unfounded” and that their objective is to “manipulate public opinion”.

“We reiterate the position of the Moldovan authorities regarding the exclusively peaceful solution of the Transnistrian conflict on the basis of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within internationally recognized borders,” it has settled.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has denounced the “significant accumulation of personnel and military equipment of Ukrainian units” near the border and “the unprecedented increase in drone overflights by the Ukrainian Armed Forces” over the territory of the breakaway Moldovan region.

The Transnistria region – whose population is mostly Russian and Ukrainian – has gained prominence due to its link with the Russian government and its important geostrategic position. The Ukrainian authorities have come to denounce possible Russian incursions into western Ukraine from Transnistria, while the authorities of the separatist region have demanded that their independence be recognized in a “peaceful” way.
