Metsola calls for a strong response to Iran's repression of democratic protests

BRUSSELS, Jan 16. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has defended this Monday the pro-democratic demonstrations in Iran, affirming that they are “on the right side of history” and has called for a forceful response to the repression unleashed by the Tehran regime.

In a message at the beginning of the plenary session in Strasbourg, France, the Maltese ‘popular’ organization has assured that the institution will not “leave alone” the protesters in Iran, of whom it has said that “they are on the right side of history”. . “They will make history and we will be by their side while they do it,” she proclaimed.

Metsola has indicated that the international community must respond forcefully to the “terror” unleashed by Tehran against the participants in the protests, after the arrests and death sentences of protesters.

In this sense, he has demanded more measures against the Iranian courts, those responsible for the deaths in the streets and the executions of protesters, in a call to redouble international pressure against the regime of the ayatollahs for the violence unleashed after the death in custody of the young Kurdish Mahsa Amini last September.

Humanitarian organizations estimate that more than 500 demonstrators have died from the violent repression of the protests, while Tehran has applied the death penalty against four people and more than a hundred risk death sentences.

For its part, the European Union is already preparing a new round of sanctions against Iran for its internal repression against protesters, ahead of the bloc’s meeting of foreign ministers next Monday, in restrictions that will be included in the sanctions regime for Human Rights violations.
