The transitional government of Mali has proposed this Tuesday to the Malian political class the convocation of presidential elections for February 2024, after the military junta extended in May another two years the transition that began after the coup d’etat of August 2020.

In a meeting with the representatives of the country’s political parties, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Abdoulaye Maiga, presented a proposal for an electoral calendar that includes the holding of the first round of the presidential elections in January 2024, and the second round a month later, according to ‘Journal du Mali’.

Likewise, the proposal provides for the holding of the first and second round of parliamentary elections in October and November 2023, respectively, and the holding of the constitutional referendum in May of the same year.

This exchange initiated with the political class has taken place weeks after the United Nations called for a “rapid transition” in Mali, since the military junta announced a two-year extension of the open transition after the August 2020 coup, who overthrew the then Malian president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Assimi Goita led the coup against Keita in August 2020 and subsequently led a second coup in May 2021 against the transitional authorities -at which time he overthrew the president and prime minister, Bah Ndaw and Moctar Ouane-, rising to power.
