The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has conveyed to his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi, his “disappointment” at the lack of progress in the negotiations to recover the 2015 nuclear agreement in a telephone conversation held this Saturday.
“Several months after the suspension of the negotiations in Vienna, (Macron) has expressed his disappointment at the lack of progress and has insisted to President Raisi on the need to make a clear decision to conclude the agreement and return to the implementation of his nuclear commitments”, reported the Elysee.
Macron has “reiterated his conviction” that “a solution is still possible” to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, “but it must be done as soon as possible.”
In addition, Macron and Raisi have addressed the issue of the war in Ukraine and the consequences of the conflict in terms of both energy and food security.
“Finally, the President of the Republic reiterated his deep concern about the situation of the four French citizens arbitrarily detained in Iran”, for whom he has requested their “immediate release”, concludes the note from the French Presidency.
For its part, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that the telephone call lasted 120 minutes and has stressed that any nuclear agreement depends on the resolution of the “safeguard issues” raised by Tehran and the provision of “guarantees”. necessary”.
On the other hand, Raisi highlighted Iran’s work in the field of security in the Middle East region, without which “Islamic State would have already declared a caliphate in Europe”. In addition, Raisi stressed that “US sanctions against Iran harm the global economy and Europe in particular.”
