Kidnapped politician beheaded two weeks ago in southeastern Nigeria

June 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

A politician and former regional parliamentarian from the Nigerian state of Anambra (southeast) has been beheaded by unidentified people about two weeks after being kidnapped from his home in the town of Mpkor, authorities have confirmed.

Anambra Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga has stated that the decapitated body of the politician, Nelson Achukwu, has been found in the Ulasi Rivers area. “He was quickly buried by the family, as the body was already decomposing,” he detailed.

“Efforts were underway to free him (from his kidnappers) when this unfortunate event took place,” he said. Achukwu was kidnapped several months ago by people who accused him of passing information to the Army, although he was later released.

However, the man was kidnapped again in Mkpor and was not released after his family paid 15 million naira (around 34,185 euros) to his kidnappers to achieve his return, according to the Nigerian newspaper ‘The Premium Times’.

The event takes place a month after the parliamentarian of Anambra Okechukwu Okoye was also kidnapped and beheaded, amid a general deterioration of the security situation in the southeast of the African country, with numerous incidents involving Biafran separatist militiamen.
