US First Lady Jill Biden is experiencing a “flare-up” of COVID-19 after initially testing negative for the virus over the weekend, the White House reported Wednesday.
For his part, President Joe Biden, who spent three days with his wife at their vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, continues to test negative. He too suffered a flare-up earlier this month after recovering from the virus.
Jill Biden first tested positive on August 15, when she and her husband were vacationing on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. She isolated herself there until she received two negative tests and was allowed to rejoin the president in Delaware on Sunday.
She “has not experienced any new symptoms and will remain in Delaware, where she has begun isolation procedures,” said deputy communications director Kelsey Donohue.
He added that the White House medical team has identified close contacts of the first lady and they have been notified.
Jill Biden, 71, has had two regular and two booster shots, as has her husband. She has been taking the antiviral drug Paxlovid, which has been effective in preventing severe symptoms and deaths among the high-risk population, although a minority of people who have taken it have flared up within days of recovery.
The White House indicated that the president is a close contact of the first lady and therefore will wear the mask for 10 days in closed spaces or when he is close to other people. You will also be tested for more frequent COVID-19.
