Intel cancels manufacturing of its mega R&D lab in Oregon

The plans that Intel had to create a mega data center-oriented R&D facility in Hillsboro, in the state of Oregon, with a manufacturing cost of about 700 million dollars, it seems that they have gone to ruin before the wave of cuts that are being applied by the majority of big technology companies.

Although said laboratory will not be built, the company does maintain plans to create a data center development laboratory in Oregon, but creating something cheaper and smaller at a lower cost, instead of the large research facility he had promised. These works will take place elsewhere in Oregon and will continue the investigations the company is already conducting at other facilities in the state. Not surprisingly, Intel has a workforce of around 22,000 employees in that state.

In total, Intel is applying a strategy of spending cuts of more than 3,000 million dollars for this year 2023 due to a decrease in sales of 16% below what was expected last year, which may also lead to layoffs of employees in area.

Interestingly, Intel had threatened that Oregon would be left out of the chip race if its government did not apply more incentivesa strategy that they are also trying in Europe to create new facilities.
