European Committee of the Regions welcomes Ukraine and Moldova's EU candidate status

June 24. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Committee of the Regions have welcomed the granting of candidate status to the European Union to Ukraine and Moldova, as it represents an “important signal” to encourage both countries “to move forward along the path of democracy, the rule of law “and provide greater security to its citizens.

“We have been actively supporting Ukraine on its democratic path,” says the body’s statement, which has highlighted the advice it has been providing to the kyiv government since 2015 on decentralization and to strengthen its institutions.

In this sense, it has valued solidarity and the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid to its Ukrainian partners, especially that of those cities and regions of the European Union that border with Ukraine.

“We are ready to support the new candidate countries in the path of the reforms that lie ahead, particularly in the areas of local democracy, good governance and resilience,” it says.

“We call on the international community to contribute to the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine,” demanded this assembly of local representatives, who together with regional associations seek to provide “advice through the next ‘Ukraine Reconstruction Platform’.

With regard to Moldova, the European Committee of the Regions has positively valued the reforms of the president, Maia Sandu, which served to “pave” the path to accession to the EU and has announced that they will continue to cooperate with local Moldovan authorities in this sense.
