Elon Musk could revive Vine, the short video app

Musk had reportedly suggested bringing back the app shortly after finalizing his $44 billion purchase of Twitter in October 2022, and sources told Axios that the social network was in exploratory talks to revive Vine.

While the entrepreneur is in no way obligated to honor the result of his survey, his recent track record since assuming leadership of X suggests that he could make a decision based on user responses.

His time at the helm of the social network has been plagued by controversies and policy changes, but he has a history of making decisions that align with poll results. And in fact the purchase of the social network was part of several surveys and tweets that the businessman launched months ago.

What is Vine and why is it related to Twitter?

In 2012, Vine was founded and launched by Rus Yusupov, Dom Hofmann and Colin Kroll and was sold to Twitter for an estimated $30 million. The app's concept was simple: creators filmed and posted six-second videos, similar to the short video format of apps like TikTok.

After its release on January 24, 2013, its popularity quickly grew. By April 2013, it had become the most downloaded video-sharing app and had amassed 200 million users, however its popularity began to decline in 2016, as Vine's growth slowed significantly due to increased competition.

Vine lost about 80% of users at its peak and announced shortly after that the app would be shutting down for good.

Although YouTube was always a big competitor for this app, the app's real enemies were Instagram and Snapchat, which quickly became a problem for Vine because they were large platforms that added better features.
