COPENHAGEN, 25 Jan. (DPA/EP) –
The Government of Denmark has announced this Wednesday that it has decided to postpone for the moment its plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda who arrive in Danish territory while waiting for the support of the European Union to carry out this measure.
The Migration Minister, Kaare Dybv, has indicated that although the government coalition, elected in November, presents different opinions on how to handle the issue, it is committed to the matter.
However, he has confirmed that the negotiations on the establishment of a detention center in Rwanda are not taking place at the moment despite the fact that it was one of the main plans of the Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, before the celebration of the the last elections held last November.
However, the left-wing parties that support the government have been opposed to this measure. The Danish Parliament approved in June 2021 a law that makes it possible to have detention centers for asylum seekers in third countries.
This would allow authorities to send asylum seekers to non-EU countries while they wait for their applications to be processed in Denmark. The country has thus joined the United Kingdom, which was the first to announce the sending of migrants to Rwanda while the applications are being processed, although the measure has raised controversy and for the moment no transfer has been carried out.
