At least six soldiers and twelve rebels killed in clashes near Pakistan-Afghanistan border

September 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Pakistani authorities reported on Friday that at least six army personnel and twelve suspected “terrorists” have been killed in two clashes near the border with Afghanistan.

Security forces in the country have said that a group of soldiers were attacked overnight by a group of “terrorists” at a security post in the mountainous region of South Waziristan. As a result, six soldiers were killed and a dozen wounded.

“Our troops fought bravely and stopped the attempted incursions. They also killed five Jawarij,” the statement said, using the term used by the government last June to refer to the perpetrators of these attacks.

A second clash was subsequently reported, this time in an exchange of fire that was followed by an army attack that resulted in more than a dozen Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants being killed as they tried to cross the border.

“The infiltrators were surrounded, fought off and after an intense exchange of fire, seven of them were sent to hell,” the Pakistani Army Intelligence Service (ISPR) said in a statement, adding that security forces had seized weapons, ammunition and explosives.

Clashes between the two sides have been going on for several hours in one of Pakistan’s most volatile areas, which was once controlled by Islamist militants linked to the al-Qaeda group, who were driven out by security forces in 2014 as part of an offensive against jihadist organisations.
